Well it was bound to happen sooner or later. My husband is a big NFL fan and so I’m forced to know something about football. Michael Vick, the NFL Pro responsible for hanging dogs from trees, electrocuting them and drowning them in tubs of water all in the name of the crime of dog fighting, was finally signed today by the Philadelphia Eagles.
To be clear, I despise Michael Vick and everything he represents. Given a choice, I would stick an electric prod up his ass and let go with full voltage. Fortunately for Vick, that’s probably never going to happen. I don’t like the soft sentence he got and I’m not convinced he’s the least little bit remorseful of the pain and suffering he caused those poor dogs. I am convinced he’s sorry he got caught is all.
Furthermore, it is making me sick hearing people talk about how Vick has been proactive speaking across the country regarding dog fighting. Have we all forgotten already that he’s not doing this out of redemption or any kind of volunteer atonement? This is part of his get out of jail card and he is being forced to do this as part of his punishment for killing dogs. ![]()
So having said all that, I also know that he’s a hell of a quarterback and that there was no way he was going to be sidelined for any length of time. Not when talented players like him are so few and far between. I knew in my heart that eventually a team would be forced to take him. And that’s what I think happened with Eagles. This is a team that has long avoided signing any player with questionable character flaws, moral issues or any taint of scandal. To explain this signing away by claiming to be believers in second chances is load of horse manure! Vick was available, he came cheap (1.6 million is extremely cheap considering he used to be the highest player in the league) and who knows, maybe after a year the fans will have forgotten how many dogs he tortured and killed.
It’s a gamble the Eagles are apparently willing to take.
I doubt the fans will be that forgiving. Already I’m seeing signs of boycott and repercussions on the Eagle’s sponsors for this move. It is my hope that the those who said that football fans love their game but they love their dogs more are correct and they will not forget what Michael Vick did and will continue to shame him whenever he steps onto the field. Advocates like me will be here reminding them whenever necessary, I guarantee it.
Meanwhile, the dogs who could be were rescued and are being rehabilitated and placed in loving forever homes. I will hold onto that thought while football season progresses and we’ll see what we’ll see when the dog killer is put into the game. ![]()
