The Rodeo Rednecks Are At It Again!

Update: I was reminded earlier today that Coke, who I left off the sponsor list below, is a major sponsor of ALL rodeo events and should be included in your product boycott and letters of protest.  I took this from the Coca Cola website:

Does The Coca-Cola Company sponsor rodeos?

“Coca-Cola cares about the welfare of animals and supports their proper treatment. That is why the Company and our U.S. bottling partners will not sponsor events or attractions that feature animals unless the event organizers have policies and procedures in place to support the humane treatment of animals and provide ready access to quality veterinary care to protect the animals health and safety.”

So you tell me, what part of “humane treatment of animals” and “protect the animals health and safety” does Coke not get?

Animal Cruelty at the 2009 National High School Rodeo Finals

At the 2009 National High School Rodeo Finals in Farmington, NM, both bulls and horses were cruelly electroshocked in direct violation the National High School Rodeo Association’s own rules.

I could hardly believe my eyes today when I watched this video showing the Rodeo Rednecks applying electroshocks to the horses and bulls.  I didn’t want to watch the video because I knew it was going to make me angry but I can’t not watch these things just to avoid becoming angry. Too many people avoid the truth so they don’t have to feel or do anything about the cruelty and abuse that these animals suffer at our hands.

Anger is, after all, what motivates this blog.  And I am really angry tonight.

Enough is enough already!  These are children being taught that it’s not only okay to be cruel to animals but it’s also okay to break the rules! Because you see, there ARE rules in place at this event to prohibit using electroshock on the animals.  However, as you will see in the video, if you are strong enough to watch it, electroshock is being used blatantly in front of everyone including the “might as well not be there” officials and judges.

And it isn’t just the electroshocks either.  I’m sure they’re using this in place of the spurs that grown men use to scrape up the sides of the horses to make them buck or various other tools of torture that are used on these poor defenceless animals to make them respond to the human’s desires.  To know that these morons are passing along their sick need for pain and suffering as a form of entertainment to their children just makes me see red!

Please watch this video: It’s important…

I am sick to death of rodeos and circuses!  There’s no reason for compassionate and humane people to be spending money on these events.  Go on a picnic, take a kayak ride on the lake but quit paying to watch pain and suffering inflicted on animals!  Karma is a nasty mistress and someday it might just be you who needs rescuing.  God forbid it’s an animal you’re counting on for that rescue.

For those of you who are compassionate and angry enough to do something about it, remember this:  The Power of One is to Do Something.  Anything.

NHSRA Partner Links – On this page you can find links to the sponsors listed below. I plan on contacting each and every one of these and letting them know they are on my list of merchants I will not buy from and that they are included here on this blog as being a contributor to the cruelty inflicted on these animals.

  1. Cheryl,

Thank you so much for helping to spread the word about this cruelty. I’m the investigator who shot that videotape and you described it all very well.

The only additional point I’d make is that sponsors are really the key to ending this cruelty. In addition to those you listed, Coca-Cola was a sponsor of this rodeo as well as being a huge sponsor of rodeos everywhere. We are asking people to call Coke and tell them to get out of the animal cruelty business and stop sponsoring rodeos. 1-800-Get-Coke.

    Thanks again!

Thanks Mike. I wasn’t aware that Coke was a sponsor of this specific rodeo but I have called for a boycott on Coke in previous posts. I will update this post to include them as well. I have personally banned any Coke products from my home and have contacted them directly to tell them my thoughts. Hopefully others will follow.
